This roundtable brings together stakeholders from industry, government, academia, and NGOs whose activities involve the use of sand. Recent reports by the United Nations sounded the call to raise awareness of the global sand crisis, gather comprehensive data on supply and demand, and develop sustainable substitutes. Our Northeastern University and University of Plymouth teams hosted a 2024 conference to address these issues and offer this roundtable as a follow-up forum.
The focus of the roundtable is to:
- Identify the status of the supply and demand of sand in construction, marine and coastal environments
- Discuss challenges and potential solutions for reducing sand use and adopting sustainable substitutes
- Set the groundwork to share information across sectors and create databases related to sand
Speakers include:
- Arnaud Vander Velpen, Sand Industry and Data Analytics Officer, UNEP/GRID-Geneva
- Ashley Long, Geologist, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management
- Nick Brown, Coastal Scientist, HDR,
- Adel A. Zadeh, Maria Peng, Sheila Puffer, Northeastern University
- Jonathan Moizer, Minchul Sohn, University of Plymouth, UK
- Others to be confirmed
